Location, Location & Location

Opening a Restaurant isnt easy particularly a Korean Restaurant. This is a known fact to me because i do have many friends in this business. Some of them succeeded and some of them failed in this business. Location of the restaurant does play an important element in towards the sucess and failure of the business.

Most Korean Restaurants in Malaysia is located in Hartamas and Ampang. Why there u say? because most this places are filled with the main customers- Koreans! However, this does indicate strong competition within the industry. Imagine, 5 Korean restaurants located at on the same row of shoplots! The Korean restaurants that suceeded, i believe, must have had a a competitive edge which i will eventually explore in my future posts. But the question here is whether it is adviseble for new Korean Restaurant owners to set up their business in Hartamas and Ampang knowing there is major competition within the area?

Hmm that is a very interesting question that you posed there… I think that as u mentioned, location is very important! Because if the restaurant is placed in an unknown location it may not get much business unless it does extensive advertising and have a lot of good contacts as well as word of mouth.. but on the other hand opening in a place that has a lot of competition might be difficult as well.. It depends on how the business owners manage the business to determine whether it is a success or failure.. advertising and public relations as well as the quality of the product is also an important factor…

i don’t think a restaurant owner should be worried bout risk in such a competitive area if like u say there must be a need for competitive edge.A owner has to have a sense of responsibility to its customers while operating not only on the short run but on the long run mainly, a well maintain operation of high standards provides u with a a greater credibility wit the customers n wit tat there wont be any loss in business n customers but an increase in customers.Well i think the key is having standard n quality with food in running a business n there wont be a need for risk issue’s.

The Korean Restaurant Owners obviously are Korean. Korean community are very closed to each other. This has an adverse effect on the competitiveness and market spread. The Korean food already accepted by many all over the world.
This article is an interesting subject. More than thousands different type of Traditional Korean Food alone, depending from which region the food is prepared. Not to mention the fusion dishes. There should be depth on the issue on location, market strategy and speciality type of food..

YES.. there may be a hell lot of competition, but give it a thought.. Don’t you think that the competition actually contributed to the publicity? With many restaurants in the same category, e.g Korean, Japanese..etc. located in a specific area, it actually becomes a hotspot for the locals. Thus, business will be great!

From experience, there are numbers of good Korean Restaurant in Kuala Lumpor. Name like Hankook Won, Korea Won etc are very established fine dining place. HankookWan in Wisma MNI and Korea Won is in Jalan Sultan Ismail . Location thats completely away from Korean population.
The Korean Restaurants in Ampang Point (Ampang Avenue) are equaly good. However due to location, not many Korean Food craze willing to go and eat there.

Hmm..I once went to Ampang to have Korean food and to my suprise there were many Korean restaurants! Honestly, I couldnt choose which restaurant to dine! I guess, in order to survive in such competitive environment, korean restaurant owner must have the provide something different and rather unique!
